The Anglesea Bike Park came about through the efforts of the Anglesea community (now represented by the Anglesea Bike Park Committee of Management), Alcoa Anglesea and the Surf Coast Shire.

The Anglesea Bike Park was designed and constructed by Glen Jacobs (2006) and caters for all skill levels with riders encouraged to ride within their own ability on the mountain Cross (4 X) track or on the more technical Jump Trail course.

The Anglesea Bike Park boasts Victoria's first world class 4X track designed and built by legendary trail builder Glen Jacobs of World Trails. It also includes a dirt jump area and skill course with log rides.

The facility is managed by a voluntary committee made up of local riders and community members including representatives from the Surf Coast Shire and Alcoa. The committee organises regular working bees to maintain the facilities and welcomes anybody wanting to lend a hand.

Users Code of Conduct:

• Take pride in sharing this facility with others of varying ability
• Avoid skidding
• Do not take short cuts or make changes to the track at any time
• Please stay on the formed tracks and clean your bike to prevent the spread of cinnamon Fungus
• Take your rubbish home
• Trail bikes are not permitted to use this facility

Maintenance

The Anglesea Bike Park Committee of Management (COM) consists of volunteer riders who maintain the track, facilities and Bike Park area.

New Bike Park for Anglesea gets the go ahead

Construction of the new Anglesea Bike Park is now expected to begin at the end of the month and be completed by mid to late October.

The long awaited facility is the result of the combined efforts of Alcoa Anglesea, the Surf Coast Shire, the Anglesea Bike Park Committee of Management and the local community.

The new bike park will include a quality 500 metre ‘mountain cross’ track and jump trails to suit riders of all ages and abilities.

The facility will be located in Camp Rd Anglesea on land owned by Alcoa, beside the former Anglesea BMX track.

It has been designed by renowned track designer Glen Jacobs from MV Australia who will oversee the design and construction of the bike park.

Alcoa will fund the construction of the facility with additional support from the Surf Coast Shire and the local community.

Surf Coast Shire Mayor Cr Libby Mears welcomed the initiative to create “this important community facility which will be quite a draw card for Anglesea”.

“We will soon have a bike park in the Shire that will encourage more community participation in a great recreational activity within a safe but challenging environment,” Cr Mears said.

Manager of the Alcoa Anglesea Power Station Phil Cooke is excited about the project and acknowledged the many years of planning, hard work and perseverance behind the community project.

“This is a great example of what can result from strong local partnerships. We are proud to be a part of the creation of a new recreational resource for locals and visitors in Anglesea” Mr Cooke said.

New Mayor at Hot Opening

Despite a scorching 35 degrees on Saturday 9 December , the Surf Coast's Shire new mayor Cr Rose Hodge was delighted to perform her first official duty and declare the Anglesea Bike Park Open to the public.

Along with Phil Cooke from Alcoa Anglesea and Ari Lingam, chairperson of the Anglesea Bike Park Committee, Cr Hodge cut the ribbon - with the local town criers ringing in the opening.

A number of representatives from the local community braved the hot conditions with the Lions Club cooling everyone down with icy cold drinks.

Mark Harvey who was in town from Melbourne for the Anaconda Adventure Race gave the park the thumbs up and wowed the audience with an impressive riding demonstration on the international standard 4 cross track.

Phil Cooke, manager Alcoa Anglesea Power Station, said it was wonderful to see the facility already being used by a range of community members and paid tribute to the efforts of all those who worked together to bring the project to fruition.

Cr Hodge highlighted the importance of partnerships with the Surf Coast Shire, Alcoa and the Anglesea community working hard to finally make this project happen.

“ Whilst this facility has been provided for the Anglesea community and visitors, it is great to know that it has the capacity to attract state, national and even international events…. a plus for Anglesea when this occurs,” the mayor said.

The Anglesea Bike Park is located at 80 Camp Rd next to the new DSE office building site and is open in daylight hours.

Alcoa looking for community input into what will happen to the Anglesea BMX track.

In the early 1980's the Anglesea BMX Club was formed and the track was constructed on land leased by Alcoa under the Mines (Aluminum Agreement) Act 1961 and freehold land owned by Alcoa.

The Anglesea BMX club ceased to operate in 1997 and since then a suitable committee of management has not been found for the track. As a result there has been a decline in the quality of the site due to vandalism and lack of maintenance...read more
