Coastal Gardening in June

Grab a hot cuppa and have a walk around your garden. Breathe deeply and appreciate nature at work. The wattles and correas are flowering, bulbs are just about to explode with colour and the rest of the garden is starting to stir from its winter sleep. The shortest day of the year has passed and you have not got time to sit inside watching on T.V. Your garden needs you.

Spread limeJobs for June

  • Run the lawn mower over fallen leaves to create instant mulch. Put a plank across top of compost bin and chop up garden clippings into 100mm lengths and let fall into compost bin.
  • Divide dormant herbaceous perennials e.g. canna, gerbera, gladioli, iris and liliums.
  • Spread lime over vegie garden (a handful to the square metre). Also use lime on lawns at the same rate to correct acid build up from lawn foods.
  • Plant out onions, garlic and silver beet seedlings. Sow seeds of broad beans, peas, carrots, etc.
  • Plant strawberries, rhubarb and asparagus crowns.
  • Plant roses, fruit trees and ornamental trees.
  • Plant flowering annuals in baskets and pots. Simple combinations for hanging baskets
  • White alyssum, trailing blue lobellia and yellow pansy
  • White primula, blue pansy and yellow viola
  • Virginian stock and white trailing lobellia

These quick growing shrubs and trees need careful selection. To get the right one for your spot ask your nurseryman for advice.

P.S. After working in the garden all day and falling asleep in the chair after dinner, remember, before you go to bed put the cyclamen outside overnight - they love the cold, even if you don't.
