A Surprise at Anglesea

The Inverlochy on the rocks

On Friday morning, 11 year old William Harvey awoke in his cottage by the sea. When the mist lifted at 7.30 AM he was amazed to see a ship in full sail hard and fast on the reef. A big sea was running then and the sails were beginning to shred as the waves broke relentlessly over her. Oh! What a thrilling sight for a young imaginative lad!

News soon spread and townspeople gathered on the high cliffs to take in the sight of a ship, with most sails set, apparently at anchor offshore. It appeared that some effort had been made to lower sails but the exercise had been quickly abandoned.

That afternoon a boat was seen heading towards the wreck crewed by four Anglesea men - Messers Brearley, Letallec, Sichlau and Neilson. They tried unsuccessfully to board, but reported that there was not a soul to be seen!

A ghost ship? And so the mystery deepened.
