Cobb&CoIn order to reach Melbourne as promptly as possible, Captain Kendrick decided that his party should leave immediately. Cobb&Co supplied two drags for their conveyance. And after hearty cheers for the highly appreciated care of their Barwon Heads friends, they departed.

Crowds gathered in the streets of Geelong to see them pass by, and great sympathy was expressed, especially for Mrs. Kendrick.

Her fellow voyagers also thought highly of the captain's wife. One, with a Scottish accent, declared, "She showed herself possessed of true girt."

An English voice was raised then, "Can't you say what you mean in English? I say she was full of grit."

"Well," said the Scot, "Have it grit or sand or whatever you like - she is a brave little woman." This statement was applauded by all who had shared her fate.

Despite losing all their possessions on the reef, the party was jovial as they boarded the train for Melbourne. No doubt thankful just to be alive.
