SURF Coast Shire will spend $100,000 upgrading public spaces this financial year as part of a five-year plan to enhance access to, and use of, community areas.
The new funding is driven by community aspirations for improved public spaces, and a resulting council audit and review of recreational facilities, parklands and pathways.
Surf Coast mayor, Cr Keith Grossman, said the parks enhancement program was well underway with several projects already completed including a:
- New bridge at Jan Juc Creek adjacent to Hoylake Avenue
- Alleyne Avenue pathway upgrade, Torquay
- New Varna Gully pedestrian bridge, Lorne
- New park benches at Stribling Reserve, Lorne
- New pedestrian bridge and stairs, Policeman's Paddock, Lorne.
Cr Grossman said significant works would continue to take place across the Shire to renew jetties, park seating, pathways, picnic tables, shelters, fences and public barbecues.
Works currently underway include the upgrading of jetties at Coogoorah Park, Anglesea, and the installation of new barbecues at Bellbrae Reserve.
Cr Grossman said council had consulted widely with residents and ratepayers to determine community priorities and was excited to see the results - an enhanced network of access pathways and bridges and renewal of recreational areas to enable greater use by families, sports people and outdoor enthusiasts.
