Melaleuca Gallery has been a fine art venue
for over 20 years. It is located at 121 Great Ocean Road,
Anglesea, opposite the river, protected by the ancient Melaleuca
trees, after which the gallery has been named.
gallery building was constructed after the First World War
as a beach house, to a simple design that makes it ideal
for displaying art. The building is in original condition
with its character intact. The only alterations have been
doorways to connect the main rooms.
The gallery was established by Sadrene Smith who saw the
need for a Fine Art Gallery on the West Coast. The gallery
offers a venue for artists from Victoria and interstate
the opportunity to exhibit out of the metropolitan area.
The gallery holds a regular exhibition program
over the summer months. A core group of artists have been
exhibiting with the gallery for 15 to 20 years. Several
have been successfully living and working overseas in more
two decades the works exhibited have changed from traditional
realistic paintings to contemporary works which include
canvases in oil and acrylic, works on paper in all medium
Robert Ingpen, one of Australia's best known book illustrators,
who now resides on the West Coast, is represented by the
gallery and has had many successful exhibitions of original
illustrations from various books.
The gallery offers consultation and private
viewings by appointment, in and around Melbourne and the
West Coast, plus packaging and shipping of artworks both
interstate and overseas.
