15 April 2003
It seems as though local knowledge and raw talent
won the day when Adam Robinson and Nic Muscroft won first and second
place respectively in the Surf Dive'n'Ski Trials competition held
yesterday at Winkipop, adjacent to Bells Beach.
This is no small win for these two local surfers,
for it secures for each of them a "wildcard" place in
the 2003 Rip Curl Pro World Championship Tournament (WCT), beginning
today at Bells Beach.
Under squally offshore conditions which produced a
clean 1m swell, Adam and Nic surfed well throughout the afternoon
in the 4-man round robin heats, against a field of 14 national and
international surfers. The Surf Dive'n'Ski Trials involves 16 competitors
- eight from the Rip Curl International team and eight from Victoria.
Adam Robinson's tally for the day came in at 15.25
closely followed by Nic Muscroft on 14.75.
excitement was clearly evident as he dropped his board on the rocks
to run down to congratulate his mate Nic Muscroft as he emerged
from the waves.
